The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has raised concerns over compliance with environmental clearance conditions at two coal mines operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) in Odisha.

The findings emerged from a compliance audit covering the relevant financial period, with the report pointing to irregularities associated with the operation of the mines. The observations highlight gaps in adherence to conditions attached to environmental approvals and raise questions around regulatory compliance in coal mining operations.

The audit comes at a time when India’s coal sector continues to play a critical role in meeting the country’s energy requirements while facing increasing scrutiny over environmental management, land use and statutory compliance.

For the mining and infrastructure ecosystem, the findings underline the importance of stronger monitoring mechanisms and stricter adherence to environmental conditions throughout the life cycle of a mining project.
